Microdermabrasion Treatments For Improving Acne Scarring

Diamond dermabrasion is a crystal-free form of microdermabrasion, a mechanical type of peel that removes the outermost layer of skin, improving skin texture and tone, and promoting the body’s natural skin renewal process to create new skin cells to replace the layer that was removed. It is a great solution to reduce the contrast of superficial skin pigmentation and scars, which are a common consequence of acne, making it one of the best, if not the best acne scarring reduction facial available.

There are other resurfacing techniques, which can also improve the looks of skin substantially. Chemical peels, which often use an acid or intense enzymatic substance to corrode the outer layer of skin, while laser resurfacing uses intense light to burn the skin off. All the treatment techniques vary in how they go about the result, but are in fact doing the same thing… removing the outer layer of skin. When compared to other modalities, diamond dermabrasion is the only resurfacing method that is applying the forces onto the surface in a lateral direction (side-to-side). For instance, laser energy is discharged onto the skin from a 90 degree angle onto the surface of the skin, and chemical and enzymatic peels dissolve skin cells they touch (without any specific direction).

The benefit of removing the outer layer with lateral friction becomes especially evident with acne pits and scars, which are indentations and protrusions from the skin surface. As the dermabrasion is performed on the surface, the higher points in the skin push out the hardest, and the indentations recede from the side force, meaning that the highest points will be reduced most, and the lower surfaces the least. In opposition a chemical peel will corrode all the skin treated evenly (if it was applied evenly), meaning that indentations could appear slightly larger as the skin in the edges is corroded. Laser will burn an even amount of skin thickness in the higher and lower areas, and less skin from the inclined surfaces at the edges of skin indentations. It is something important to consider when you are looking for a resurfacing treatment for unevenness in the skin. As an additional benefit, surface pigmentation, which is the another common issue present along with acne scars, as in sun damage of prior acne lesions is lessened simultaneously in the one treatment, making diamond dermabrasion a highly recommendable solution for acne scar treatment. As a separate note, people who have, or have had acne usually have areas of the face with larger, more open pores, which can be an issue with traditional crystal microdermabrasion, because it leaves a powdery crystal reside on the skin that can cause further complications with the pores.
